What is Cross-Household Sharing?
Cross-household sharing lets you connect your household with other households (friends, family, neighbors) and selectively share specific items from your inventory. It's perfect for:
- Sharing tools with neighbors - Let them see what you have available to borrow
- Family connections - Share items between your house and parents'/kids' houses
- Workshop partners - Collaborate on shared equipment
- Community tool libraries - Build a network of shared resources
Household vs Cross-Household Sharing
Regular Household Sharing:
- Everyone in YOUR household shares ALL items
- Full edit access for all members
- Permanent connection
- Example: You, your spouse, and kids all see everything in your garage
Cross-Household Sharing:
- Connect YOUR household with OTHER households
- Share SPECIFIC items you choose
- Control view-only or edit permissions
- Can be temporary or permanent
- Example: Share your lawn mower with your neighbor's household

- When it's due back
- Current condition
- Send return reminders if overdue
Best Practices
Connection Management
✅ DO:
- Give connections clear names ("Smith Family - Neighbors")
- Use connection types to organize (Family, Friend, Neighbor)
- Set expiration for temporary situations
- Review connections every 6 months
- Only connect with people you trust
❌ DON'T:
- Share connection codes publicly
- Accept connections from unknown households
- Keep connections you no longer need
- Share high-value items without view-only first
Sharing Strategy
Start Conservative:
- New connection? Start with view-only permissions
- Share a few test items first
- Upgrade to edit access after trust is established
- Gradually share more items
Organize Your Shares:
- Create a category for "Frequently Loaned Items"
- Mark expensive items as private
- Use storage locations to track borrowed items
- Keep notes on each shared item about terms
Communication Tips
💬 Include Notes When Sharing:
- "Available anytime, just text first!"
- "Please return cleaned after use"
- "Located in garage, door code is 1234"
- "Can borrow for up to 1 week"
💬 Set Clear Expectations:
- How to request to borrow
- Return timeframe
- Condition expectations
- Replacement policy if damaged
Real-World Examples
Example 1: Neighbor Tool Sharing
Situation: You and your neighbor want to share tools instead of both buying everything.
Setup:
- You create connection with neighbor's household
- You share: Lawn aerator, pressure washer, ladder
- They share: Tile saw, leaf blower, chainsaw
- Both set to "View Only" with borrow requests required
- Use loan tracking when borrowing
Result: Both save money, everyone has access to more tools!
Example 2: Parent-Child Workshop
Situation: You're helping your adult child set up their first garage. You want to share tools but track what's at each location.
Setup:
- Connect your household with child's household
- Share common tools with "Can Edit" permission
- They update quantity/location as they move items
- No expiration - permanent family connection
- Both households see accurate inventory
Result: Easy tracking of "borrowed" tools, child can update as needed!
Example 3: Seasonal Sharing
Situation: You have a snow blower, neighbor has a wood chipper. Seasonal exchange.
Setup:
- Connect households with 6-month expiration
- You share snow blower (Oct-Mar)
- They share wood chipper (Apr-Sep)
- View-only access
- Use loan tracking for actual transfers
Result: Each household has what they need during peak season!
Example 4: Workshop Partnership
Situation: You and a friend share a workshop space and jointly maintain equipment.
Setup:
- Connect households permanently
- Share all workshop equipment with "Can Edit" access
- Both log maintenance and updates
- Share costs in maintenance records
- Both track consumable parts inventory
Result: Collaborative equipment management, shared maintenance responsibility!
Troubleshooting
Problem: Connection code doesn't work
- Codes expire in 24-48 hours - generate a new one
- Make sure entered without spaces
- Check for typos (0 vs O, 1 vs I)
- Verify other household has Premium
Problem: Can't see shared items
- Check internet connection (requires sync)
- Pull down to refresh inventory
- Verify the item was actually shared (check Shared Out)
- Make sure you accepted the connection
Problem: Shared item shows wrong information
- If you have View Only, only owner can edit
- Ask owner to update information
- Check if you're looking at a cached version - refresh
Problem: Want to stop sharing but keep connection
- You don't have to disconnect to unshare items
- Just unshare individual items
- Keep the connection active for future sharing
Problem: Accidentally shared wrong item
- Open the item immediately
- Tap Share Settings → Unshare
- Item is removed from their inventory right away
- They may have already seen it, but can no longer access it
